Shaun

Shaun Cross | shaun.cross@maddiesplace.org

President/CEO

Shaun Cross is a 4th generation Eastern Washington native, with deep roots in the region and a rich family history of over 130 years in law. A proven leader in both the legal and nonprofit sectors, Shaun has spent more than 45 years helping to shape the Spokane Region through his career as a corporate lawyer and his service on numerous boards.

Shaun held the position of Managing Partner at Paine Hamblen, LLP from 1997 to 2003 before joining Lee & Hayes, PC in 2008, where he was appointed as its first CEO from 2008 to 2015. Shaun is currently a Partner at Lee & Hayes and serves as its General Counsel. His passion for community improvement in serving on different boards also extended to his political interests, resulting in a run for Congress in 2004.

In 2018, Shaun’s leadership took on a new dimension when he incorporated Maddie’s Place. Shaun served as the founding Chairman of Maddie’s Place from 2018 until 2022 when he stepped down to become the organization’s first President and CEO, a position which he currently holds.

Shaun currently sits on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of Excelsior Wellness, an innovative, alternative healthcare system that provides youth-centered, community-based, and culturally sensitive care to thousands of families in Eastern Washington each year.

Shaun and his wife, Kathy, have been married for 49 years, and are the proud parents of four grown children: Kelly, Trevor, Emily, and Natalie.

Tricia Hughes, RN, BSN | tricia.hughes@maddiesplace.org

Founder/Clinical Coordinator

Tricia was raised in a small town outside of Chicago, Illinois. She became a nurse in 1991, and has experience in Labor and Delivery, High Risk Antepartum care and a Level 2 Nursery. Tricia and her husband, Carey, moved to Spokane in 1999, with four young children. They both had a strong desire to adopt children who were in need, and had agreed they would do so even before they were married. They became licensed foster parents in 2002 and adopted a baby boy who had suffered a long and difficult withdrawal from heroin. Four more children joined their family permanently over the next several years, and many others were temporarily loved in their home. The youngest of their adopted children is Maddie.

Caring for Maddie through opiate withdrawal after her two weeks on the streets of Spokane as a newborn, fueled Tricia’s passion for drug-dependent babies. She grew determined to find a way for more babies to be comforted in loving arms, rather than separated from their mothers and alone in a hospital crib. Tricia believes that every single newborn entering this world needs and deserves love, connection, and fierce protection. And she knows first-hand that all families raising children with prenatal substance exposure need support and resources. She is excited to care for babies and their families in Spokane for many years to come.

Kim

Kim Dunham | kim.dunham@maddiesplace.org

Director of Family Advocacy

Kim was born and raised in Long Beach, WA, a tiny town on the coast of Washington. She graduated from Western Washington University and moved to Spokane in 2001. Kim began her career working in the public school system. She later worked for Spokane County Juvenile Courts as a corrections office and then as a Guardian Ad Litem, advocating for children involved in the dependency system. Her passion for helping children and families brought her to the Department of Children Youth and Families, where she served for 10 years as a social worker and program consultant. Over the years, Kim has volunteered in various homeless outreach ministries.

Kim has been involved with Maddie’s Place since the very first meeting in 2017. As the Director of Family Advocacy, Kim’s team supports the moms by helping them reach their goals, so that they are set up for success outside of Maddie’s Place to be healthy and happy moms to their babies

Kim has been married to her husband, Nate, for 20 years and has two teenage kids at home. In her spare time, you can find her in the gym cheering on her kids in their respective sports, working on home projects, traveling, or loving on her golden retriever pups.

Pam McCain | pam.mccain@maddiesplace.org

Chief Operating Officer

Pam was born and raised in southern New Jersey. After moving to Spokane to be closer to family, she found a fulfilling career in the legal field. This opened a door into the administration and operations world, where she discovered a passion for human resources that truly sparked her enthusiasm. Eager to expand her knowledge and skills, she went on to pursue her bachelor’s in human resource management followed by a master’s in management and leadership from Western Governors University. When the law firm of Hawley Troxell closed its Spokane branch doors, another door opened at Maddie’s Place for Pam.

On a day-to-day basis, Pam provides leadership and direction while ensuring objectives and priorities align with the overall vision, core values, and purpose of Maddie’s Place. One of Pam’s greatest strengths and joys is listening to others and seeking to understand them better, allowing her to lead and cultivate an exceptional internal team. She appreciates and values the opportunity to be part of something impactful and meaningful like Maddie’s Place and is excited about what the future will bring for Maddie’s Place.

Pam is mom to two grown and flown kids and her dog, Khloe. When she is not tending to the needs of Maddie’s Place, you might find her reading in her backyard, binging on Netflix, or walking with Khloe.

Katie Tolley | katie.tolley@maddiesplace.org

Director of Advancement and Marketing

Katie, a native of Spokane, has spent much of her life giving back to the community, even receiving a Peirone Prize for outstanding philanthropy work in 2019. She is a collaborative leader who brings extensive fund development, community engagement, event production, volunteer management, and communications experience to Maddie’s Place. Katie currently serves as president of the Inland Northwest Development Council and worked for nearly 8 years with another local nonprofit that provides trauma recovery services for children and victims of crime. Now, she is thrilled to utilize those skills to support the babies and families staying at Maddie’s Place in creating happy, healthy futures.

Katie is dedicated to creating a supportive and collaborative community where everyone has the resources they need to thrive. Her work at Lutheran Community Services Northwest, a nonprofit focused on trauma recovery, deepened her understanding of trauma’s profound and lasting effects, particularly Adverse Childhood Experiences. Now, as Director of Advancement and Marketing at Maddie’s Place, she plays a key role in providing nurturing care and loving wraparound support to substance-exposed infants and their caregivers, fostering healing and helping to break generational cycles of trauma. Katie believes that offering early intervention and ongoing engagement is essential to creating happy, healthy, and connected communities full of opportunity.
