A Maddie’s Place Thanksgiving

You’ve heard it said that Maddie’s Place is just like a home. That we blend into the neighborhood. That we function like a family. As I sit here writing in a quiet, comfortable office, occasionally looking at the peaceful snow falling outside, I am filled with gratitude that this place really does feel like a home.

Something that can pass most people’s minds as they pass through our house is that we are a 24/7, around the clock medical facility. There isn’t a day that goes by where someone isn’t actually here, be that someone in admin, a nurse, infant care specialist, mom, dad. I feel even more thankful that this place can feel like home to those living here full time.

Since we are open 24 hours a day, holidays – you guessed it – are spent here too.

Maddie’s Place has always come together to make these days special. So, last week, for Thanksgiving, we had several people really go above and beyond in decorating and preparing food for those spending their Thanksgiving here.

It was quite the set up. One of the moms who was currently living at Maddie’s Place utilized the large kitchen space to make the turkey, stuffing, and potatoes. Jessica, one of our parent support team members, brought contributions to the feast, as did a couple of other staff members.

There ended up being plenty of food to go around to the former moms that came and the dedicated employees working that evening.

Working on the holidays is a sacrifice. That’s why I am always impressed and encouraged by those who opt to put the needs of someone else above their own.

Even though holidays like Thanksgiving can be difficult for a number of reasons, my heart is glad knowing that moms, dads, employees, volunteers can all have a place to fall back on.

Jessica put it well when reflecting on why she loves her role supporting the Maddie’s Place families:

“We are trying to make them feel that we are their village. Even when they leave, we are there for them.”

Jessica is a part of the ever-growing parent support team here at Maddie’s Place. As we continue to grow in capacity and capability, we are seeking to offer even more support to the families that come through our program.

But here is a special thanks to every organization, individual, school group, company who has contributed to Maddie’s Place in some way, shape, or form. You are providing priceless support to the growing community here and we couldn’t run without you!

Here’s to the holiday season! Happy December!
